Why It Matters
Aliases give you flexibility without complexity. You can hand out sales@yourcompany.com, support@yourcompany.com, and billing@yourcompany.com while funneling everything to one inbox (or a few). For individuals, aliases help you track who's sharing your address — sign up for a service with yourname+servicename@gmail.com and you'll know exactly where the spam came from.
How It Works
Your mail server maps the alias to a real mailbox. When someone sends to the alias, the server looks up the mapping and drops the message into the target inbox. The sender never knows the difference. Most providers let you send from an alias too, so replies go back with the alias as the From address.
There's no separate storage, no separate login. It's just a redirect rule at the server level.
Quick Tips
- Use role-based aliases (info@, support@, billing@) for public-facing addresses — they're easier to hand off between team members.
- Avoid sending marketing email from a role-based alias. ISPs sometimes treat them differently, and subscribers prefer a human name.
- If you're using plus-addressing (user+tag@domain.com), know that some forms don't accept the "+" character, so it's not foolproof.
