Why It Matters
CTR answers a focused question: of the people who actually read your email, how many were compelled to act? A 20% CTR means 1 in 5 readers clicked something. That's strong. A 2% CTR means your content or offer didn't resonate. Unlike click rate, CTR isn't affected by inbox placement or subject line performance — it purely measures what happened after the open.
How It Works
Your email platform divides unique clicks by unique opens. If 500 people opened your email and 75 clicked a link, your CTR is 15%. This metric is especially useful for comparing content variations in A/B tests since it controls for subject line effectiveness.
Keep in mind that Apple's Mail Privacy Protection inflates open counts by pre-loading tracking pixels, which can deflate your CTR. If you have a large Apple Mail audience, your real CTR is probably higher than what you see in reports.
Quick Tips
- Benchmark against yourself, not industry averages. A SaaS company's CTR is going to look very different from a retail brand's.
- If CTR is low, test your CTA placement, copy, and design before blaming the offer. Sometimes the fix is as simple as making the button bigger.
- Segment your CTR by device. If mobile CTR lags desktop, your email design might not be mobile-friendly.
