What is Postmaster?

By Mailneo Team|

A postmaster is the person (or team) responsible for managing email operations for a domain. The postmaster@yourdomain.com address is a standard contact point for email-related issues. Major ISPs like Google also offer Postmaster Tools dashboards for monitoring deliverability.

Why It Matters

If you're sending any volume of email, understanding the postmaster role is important. ISPs and other senders use the postmaster address to report delivery problems, abuse complaints, and technical issues. Ignoring postmaster communications can lead to undetected deliverability problems. Google's Postmaster Tools, for instance, gives you data on spam rate, domain reputation, and authentication results -- it's free and invaluable.

How It Works

RFC 5321 requires every domain that accepts email to have a working postmaster@ address. In practice, it should be monitored by whoever manages your email infrastructure. Messages sent to this address typically include bounce notifications, abuse reports, and technical coordination with other mail administrators.

Google Postmaster Tools (postmaster.google.com) and Microsoft SNDS are dashboards that show how Gmail and Outlook view your sending reputation. You register your domain, verify ownership via DNS, and get access to data about your deliverability health.

Quick Tips

  • Set up and monitor Google Postmaster Tools -- it's the closest thing to seeing what Gmail thinks of your emails
  • Make sure postmaster@ actually goes to a monitored inbox, not a black hole
  • Check your postmaster dashboard weekly if you're sending over 10,000 emails per day
